Most of our Christmas shopping gets done on well known websites or with familiar brands but there are always a few people on my list that are much trickier to buy for. They seem to have everything they want and so I’m often on the look out for something a bit different. This year, I wanted to share some great local businesses that have masses of gift ideas and in the bag you’ll also know you’re doing your bit to support local businesses in your area to thrive this festive season.
This isn’t a sponsored post and all the businesses are ones I’ve found by doing a bit of searching and asking their permission to feature. They are all based in Leicester or Leicestershire, home of the foxes, tigers and Walkers crisps of course.
Here you’ll find beautifully handmade homewares, jewellery and cards all made by Charlotte Toyer. I especially like the personalised wall hangings and bunting which would be lovely for a child’s bedroom or playroom. The counting elephants are adorable. Check out her etsy shop for more loveliness.
Their new store opened just this summer in Leicester City Centre and offers lots of plastic free and bulk shopping alternatives to help make daily life more eco friendly. The products aren’t just useful they’re beautiful too. The lip balms and even the washing cloths would make lovely stocking stuffers.
Run by the lovely mother and daughter duo Ali and May, Smartsy offer a whole range of workshops in glass fusions and many other crafts. They believe everyone should have a go and they make art and crafts accessible for all. There are regular pop up shops to purchase the gorgeous glass creations or gift cards are available for a great alternative gift to look forward to in the new year.
Everyone has a candle lover on their list. Why not get them something special this year. Avanti specialise in vegan, soy wax hand poured in Leicestershire. They offer a clean, soot free burn and are available with crackling wooden wicks. Their festive fragrances in beautiful packaging would make an ideal gift.
If Christmas isn’t the time for sentimentality then when is? Capture your loved ones hand, foot or even paw prints in a piece of handmade keepsake jewellery. Felix and Reuben create bespoke pieces from their Hinckley Studio and can turn special drawings or handwriting into something to treasure forever.
For pins, prints, stickers and more, you won’t find better than Pastel Elixer. Illustrator Ellis, designs, makes and packs each order with love and care. Encased in pastel tissue paper and washi tape, each package looks so enticing and would be perfect for stationery fans or those who appreciate the personal touches.
This local family run business has been selling sewing, craft and haberdashery products since 2004. For gift ideas big or small they have sewing boxes, craft kits and jewellery making sets. Why not have a go at pom pom making? Their low P&P prices are also fab to save you a few pennies.
We were lucky enough to have a fantastic lifestyle shoot with Deepa this Autumn and got some gorgeous shots of our family. What better gift than to capture a moment. Deepa prides herself on taking extraordinary photos of families doing ordinary things. Get in touch and she’ll put together the perfect package to give as an extra special present this year.
For those who love to bake whether it’s whipping up a batch of cookies or elaborate cake designs, you’ll find a gift for them here. Baked by Me have some delicious sounding cookie mixes which come in lovely gift jars. You’ll also find baking tools and presentation stands. I love the chocolate moulds and these sheep look almost too adorable to eat…almost.
This local two acre vineyard situated in the north Leicestershire village of Rothley, produces a whole selection of fruit, still and sparkling wines which are stocked across the county. Why not go for a local glass of fizz with your Christmas dinner this year. They also offer tours and tastings which run monthly on weekend afternoons. This would make a lovely gift for someone too.
The Pottery Shed in Hinckley has so many pieces for you to choose from and paint to create a special, personalised gift. The team will then fire your masterpiece in the kiln. There are plates, jugs, vases and more. These make especially nice presents to grandparents. Perhaps you know someone who’d love to have a go. You can buy gift vouchers or book them on to a workshops for a unique Christmas treat.
I’d love to add more local businesses and share any other fantastic, locally made products. Let me know your favourite Leicester businesses for gifts.
