Trick or Treat Tips for little monsters

Last Halloween, my girls had just turned two and so full on trick or treating seamed a bit much. Our village however has a few residents who go all out for this holiday so I didn’t want them to miss out completely.

We wrapped up and took the two minute walk to the end of our street. The place was buzzing and one particular house was lit up like Christmas. The enthusiastic occupants had charity buckets and so the girls dropped some coins in and said trick or treat. It was almost bedtime and so we politely declined the sweets and headed home.

This year we plan to stay out just a little longer, dress up and visit a few different houses. If you are thinking of taking your littlest monsters trick or treating this Halloween, here are a few handy hints to get the best out of the evening.

Halloween

Prep the monsters

Before we go, I’ll explain to Jess and Emily what we are going to do. Although they are a year older, they may be more easily scared and so we’ll talk about how people might be dressed and that it’s just pretend.

A few rules before we go trick or treat

Adults decide which houses we go to and what can / can’t be eaten before bedtime.

Halloween costume

Dress to impress

Although the floaty witch’s costume looks cute, it’s not exactly going to keep little ones warm now is it? I have planned costumes that I can add layers to. They will definitely be wearing tights, long sleeved tops, boots and if necessary a coat.

Timing

We plan to go straight after dinner. This way they will be full and so not too tempted to binge on all the goodies. It will also be dark by then and give us about an hour before we need to head home for bed.

Glow sticks

Road safety

Although I’m sure many drivers are well aware that the dark streets are full of children on Halloween, you can never be too safe. It only takes one careless mistake for the night to end in tragedy. We will be keeping the girls close and reminding them to check the roads before crossing. As an extra precaution, I’ve bought glow sticks. The girls will love these and it’ll make them highly visible. Anything reflective will do though.

Manners

I want my girls to be appreciative of all the people who are giving them something for nothing. It’s incredibly generous and I’ll be insisting on good manners. Hopefully they won’t need too much prompting for this.

Happy Halloween everyone. I hope you enjoy trick or treating with your little ones.

  1. I’ve never been a fan of trick or treating but little man can’t wait. His Dad will likely take him. #anythinggoes

  2. Great tips, especially the one about giving them glow sticks to make them easily visible in the dark

  3. Love the glowsticks idea, definitely good if you’re going near a road! we usually go to my mums as its my nieces birthday and they live in a cul-de-sac so we pop to the same few houses every year and the kids love it!

  4. We had a blast! Hope you and your fam did too! I heard lots of thank you’s, so I was pleased! #triumphanttales xoxo
