Rain, Rain, Go Away

When is it that we lose the love for rain? I can only remember one occasion when I actually enjoyed getting caught in the rain. After a particularly sticky, muggy afternoon in Disneyland Paris when I was eleven, the heavens opened and we were soaked within seconds.

For someone with a shocking memory of my childhood, it’s funny how this sticks so vividly in my head. I clearly recall how warm the water was as my sister and I splashed through the puddles. The downpour was over quickly and I have no idea whether I was happy to be drenched or not.

Not So Keen Now

Now as an adult, I’m really not the biggest fan of rain. It just seems to make everything look sad and dreary. The skies turn grey and more importantly, the showers often dictate what I can and can’t do that day with my girls. Juggling umbrellas and toddlers just doesn’t work and the snail’s pace they move at, means there is no chance of dashing for cover.

My girls on the other hand just adore the rain. They will stand, noses pressed against the window and beg to be allowed out in it. For Easter we bought them their own umbrellas. More for the fact they had cute decorations on and looked good in the Easter baskets, rather than for any practical purpose but they love them.

It’s Your Fault Peppa

Whenever our patio begins to get even slightly wet, their pleading eyes tell me how much they want to splash in the puddles. I largely blame Peppa Pig for this but I guess the opportunity to leap about in water, with no care for how wet they’ll get, is part of their childhood innocence.

This week I gave in. We were happily inside in the dry, with no reason to venture out but when they asked, I said yes. On went the wellies and raincoats and up went the brollies. Their delighted faces made me feel guilty I hadn’t allowed them out before.

What I realised was that for them, experiencing the rain like this was new. Of course they had seen rain so many times but because I avoid it and can pretty much decide whether or not to go out in it, they had rarely felt it on their skin. Not like this. Not just to stand in it, watch it, taste it

They splashed. I splashed. We listened to the sound of the raindrops hitting the umbrellas and just enjoyed the rain. It’s the first time I’ve enjoyed the rain since I was eleven. Hopefully, it’s a memory that will stick like my childhood rain.

  2. My Little girl also loves to splash in the rain and I love that she loves it. I think it’s such a shame that we live in an age where it can be seen as embarrassing to have our children wandering around in clothes caked in mud, food, etc. Great post x
