Holiday Habits to Break

Whether you’ve had a staycation or jetted off to sunnier shores, no doubt like me, you’ve indulged your little ones. Normally, I run a pretty tight ship but holidays plus doting grandparents equals a recipe for messed up routines and spoilt toddlers. After our lovely break in Jersey I’m facing three holiday habits I want to break. Straws, sugar and sleeping are causing me issues as we try and return to our everyday life.

straws

Nin2twindividuals had a box of straws that have been sat in a cupboard for who knows how many years. Because of the environmental impact of plastic straws, we try hard to avoid them. As these were either going in the bin or being used, it seemed silly to waste them. However, now the girls want straws at home. We’ve had a few meltdowns and thrown cups but I’m sticking firm on this one. Having plastic straws regularly is a holiday habit that I don’t want continuing now we are home. As well, the spill risk is enough to drive me crazy. Give me lidded cup any day.

Munchkin 360 cup

sugar

Unsuprisingly, our resolve to limit sugary snacks waivered significantly. Everyday was either ice cream or cake or both. Add in Daddy’s birthday and the related treats and it’s a miracle their teeth didn’t fall out. Why are child sized ice creams not a thing? The size of your average cone is rediculous for a toddler but it’s not as if you can get two year old twins to share one now is it? Back home, and with a few unexpected sunny days, this holiday habit is proving hard to crack. We’ll be better next week.

Ice cream

sleeping

After the awful transition from cots to cotbeds and months of later evenings, interrupted nights and battling bedtimes, we’d finally got a good routine working. Our Groclock was amazing for giving us a little extra sleep in the morning too but this wasn’t packed. Whether it was the heat, change of setting or something else, we had night after night of broken sleep followed by early early mornings. Sometimes I’d be up once or twice but one night it was five times. Mummy can’t hack this. It reminded me of those early baby days when I survived on adrenaline and about two hours sleep. Hopefully back in their familiar room, this one will sort itself quickly.

Sleeping

As much as a holiday is lovely, it’s also great to be back home. I’m so excited to be spending another year at home with my girls. The last eight months have been filled with so much fun and memories. I can’t wait to create some more.

What holiday habits are you hoping to break as we enter the new term?

PIN FOR LATER

Now the summer is coming to an end, it’s time to get back to routine and break some annoying habits. Here are three we are tackling.

  1. I’m totally with you on the lidded cups! My eldest will happily use a beaker, but if she has one the littlest wants one too and that spells disaster! Thanks so much for sharing with #Blogstravaganza xx

    1. My favourite at the moment are the munchkin 360 ones. They’re a bit pricier but are great.

  2. I have to say, the lack of sleep on holiday really threw me too! Dot is nearly three and really good normally, but with being away from a normal routine and so much going on in the day, it was hard for her to sleep. It took a few days, but now we’re home, luckily she’s back to normal sleeping. Phew!

Thanks for sharing with #Blogstravaganza xx

    1. We’ve been back a few days too and still having a few night time wakes. Really hoping this is just going to sort itself out.

  3. If a child can’t be spoiled a little, which may include a little too much sugar in the way if sweets and ice cream while on holiday then life isn’t worth living #triamphanttales@_karendennis

    1. I know you’re right, I’m just a bit of a control freak and know it’s hard to get back on track when we are home. Regardless, plenty if holiday sugar was consumed.

  4. mine is a bit older, but I’m not looking forward to the early mornings that a return to school are going to bring. I’ve tried getting back into the old routine this past week but it hasn’t been very successful #triumphnattales

    1. It’s so hard to practise early mornings when there isn’t the pressure to actually get somewhere on time.

    1. Definitely. We’ve been home a week are are close to cracking this but not quite.

  5. We had the same “issue” with straws and now they just have lidded cups with straws built in. For me this was a win win as it kept us all happy! #HumpDayLinky

    1. We got some of those but the once we bought were cheap and flimsy and last about two days 😝

  6. We had a lovely holiday but now Zach’s sleep has become a real issue. He refuses to sleep in his cot at all 🙁 we are re-sleeptraining this week and it is not going well… #anythinggoes

    1. Last night we just had one wake up so we are making progress from the holiday. I’m now resorting to bribery.

  7. Good luck, although I’m sure normal service will resume soon! We need to get back into ‘school night’ routine asap – too many late nights are starting to take their toll! #humpdaylinky

    1. Although mine aren’t at school, the return to routine is definitely needed.

  8. sounds fun lol. Maybe get one of those plastic cups with a lid and a washable straw attached to save arguments
Thanks for linking up to #AnythingGoes 🙂

    1. We bought very cheap ones of these and they lasted about 48hrs.May need to invest in better ones

  9. We didn’t go away on holiday this summer, so have actually managed quite well at keeping our routine relatively stable! So hopefully the return to school next week won’t be too hard, although I’m expecting my two to be exhausted by the end of the first week back! x #BloggerClubUK

    1. The full on days is enough to tucker even the teachers out let alone little ones.

  10. My youngest has pretty much stayed with her bedtime routine over the summer with only the occasional late night. My 8 yr old on the other hand has been up late every night and we’re struggling to get him back into his usual routine. There have also been far too many takeaways!

    1. I’m sure after a few days of full on school, you’ll be back on track.

  11. We’ve always had a routine with little man and holidays always mess it up. Whilst I love a holiday I always love coming home too. Thanks so much for joining us at #TriumphantTales. Hope to see you again tomorrow.

  12. We find this every summer, or whenever we go on holiday! It definitely takes a few weeks for life to get back to normal! #humpdaylinky

    1. Think I’ve cracked most of the bad habits…just got to sort the sleeping and we’ll be back on track.
